The truth about shapewear (and your core muscles)

The other day, I came across a post in one of the women’s groups that got me thinking.

Someone was asking if shapewear really works like it does in those ads—you know, the ones with models who look like they stepped right out of a sculptor's dream.

The picture showed this unreal hourglass figure, the kind that’s trending right now.

And yes, let’s pause for a moment—trends for female bodies?! Can we talk about how ridiculous that is?

One minute it’s the hourglass with a tiny waist and big hips, 20 years ago it was stick-thin supermodels, and who knows what’s next? It’s ludicrous, right?

Here’s the reality: those models and influencers? They don’t look like that in real life.

Well, a very small percentage of them are genetically blessed (a.k.a. winners of the body shape lottery of this decade), but most of them are heavily photoshopped, filtered, operated, lit perfectly, and posed just right.

If you had access to all that magic, you’d look like that too!

So let’s just stop comparing ourselves to these curated, completely unrealistic images.

These ads just trick us into believing that we are not enough, and if we just buy this product or that shapewear, we’ll magically look the same.

Spoiler alert: it’s a lie.

Neither of us should feel bad about our natural shape and especially not feel pressed by the media into buying shapewear or corsets, or any other super uncomfortable, unhealthy clothes.

And this leads me to my second point: shapewear is NOT the solution!

Sure, it can help for a special occasion, but wearing it regularly can harm your health.

  • It puts pressure on your pelvic floor, which can lead to issues like incontinence or prolapse.

  • It prevents your core muscles from activating naturally, making them weaker over time. Ironically, this can lead to your waist looking softer instead of firmer!

And here’s an important reminder: It’s normal to have a belly. Especially the lower belly—it’s where your vital organs are protected!

If you want to tone your waist, focus on training your deep core muscles, like the transverse abdominis (your “corset ab”).

These muscles naturally pull your belly in, support your pelvic floor, and build real strength—no shapewear required!

And remember:
Your body is enough. You are enough. Let’s stop falling for the fake images on social media and embrace the beautiful, strong women we are—belly and all.
